What is the difference between shower gel and body wash?

I was told that body wash is what you use to thourgly wash your body with and that you just apply and rinse off shower gel after thourghly washing with the body wash. I am not sure of their purposes. They seem the same to me. Does anyone know the difference between them and how to properly use them.

i always thought it was just a personaly preference..I always pic the body wash because it lathers up better

Shower gel does not clean, it adds moisture and scent. Body wash cleanses.

They both foam on a body puff I don’t think there is any difference unless you use bodywash when taking a bath too or shave with it.

For marketing reasons.
The name its probually different for marketing reasons.
