Is shaving cream better than body wash?

yankee doodle dandy asked:

I’ve started shaving recently, and I shave without shaving cream. I use body wash instead. It works alright, but after I shave, I see these black dots all over my legs. And after a day or less, if I run my hand over my legs, it feels all prickly. Would shaving cream help? Or something else?
