is body wash a good substitute for shampoo in certain situations?

i was takin a shower today and noticed i ran out of shampoo, so i washed my hair with body wash. Is that stuff bad for my hair? or is it better than just water?

    The marketers have really sold us a bill of goods. While there are some differences, there are a lot more similarities between body wash, soap, shampoo, etc.

    The body wash left the hair dry like straw so just use water when theres no shampoo.
